The Logan County Little League had a pool of 33 players to form a 10-member all-star team this season. But it has needed the county’s 26,000 residents to help propel it to the Little League World Series.
On Wednesday they packed the town square of Russellville, 25 miles southwest of Bowling Green, buying grilled steak sandwiches in an impromptu fundraiser. They called into a four-hour radio telethon, raising $65,000 to send players’ families to Williamsport, Pa. And they hung signs on storefronts to support Kentucky’s bid for its first World Series title since Louisville’s Valley Sports American did it in 2002.
The Logan County 12-year-old All-Stars will begin pool play Saturday at 8 p.m. EDT against Park View Little League of Chula Vista, Calif. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
